Comune di Marcellinara

Non ci sono progetti | Via IV Novembre, 7 88044 Marcellinara
Descrizione:
Marcellinara, spanning 20 km², lies at the foot of Mount Tiriolo in Calabria, Italy, descending to the Gola di Marcellinara at 221 meters above sea level. From its advantageous position, the town offers stunning vistas, including views of the Aeolian Islands on clear days, with Stromboli towering among them. Marcellinara is historically known for olive oil production, figs, and pure gypsum quarries, used in ancient times for its transparency akin to window glass. Silk fabrics and textiles from broom fibers were also notable. The origin of "Marcellinara" remains uncertain; it may derive from "mercenaria," indicating a place of trade, or from the Calabrian term "marcidara," meaning myrtle shrub, or from the personal name "Marcellino." The town’s rich history includes ties to the Sanseverino family from the 15th century, known for their baronial palace and patronage of Saint Francis of Paola. Marcellinara flourished with ancient fairs and legends of its foundation during the Sicilian Vespers or atop ruins of an ancient Bruzia city. Despite earthquakes devastating its historic center in 1783, landmarks like the Church of Maria SS. Assunta and the Sanseverino Palace endure, showcasing neoclassical rebuilding and religious relics. In folklore, Marcellinara is linked to Ulysses and Nausicaa, reflecting its mythic and historic allure.
