The Municipality is persuaded that the tool of the twinning can help increase solidarity among different and distant peoples. Thereby, it is important to entertain relations with the local communities. Action 1 . Tree nurseries and garden centres are the main feature of Saonara since 1820. They count for the most part of its cultural background, so much so that the rose is the symbol of the city. Action 4 Saonara is the birthplace of one of the local heros in the fight against nazifascism, Maria Borgato. She was interned at Ravensbruck Lager where she was murdered in the gas chamber in 1945. In the days of the Liberation War, 44 citizens were slaughtered in retaliation. Saonara was thereby awarded the silver medal for civil value.
